Yvonne Evelyn (Halverson) Spitzenberger was born October 12, 1922, at Newman Grove, Nebraska, to Christian Bernard and Adelia Madolin (Powell) Halverson. She died Wednesday, April 22, 2009 at the Community Memorial Hospital in Burke, South Dakota at the age of 86 years.
Yvonne moved with her family at an early age to a farm on Petes Creek north of Herrick, South Dakota. The family later moved to Bonesteel, where Yvonne graduated from high school in 1940.
On September 9, 1948, Yvonne married Ray Spitzenberger at Bonesteel. After a honeymoon in the Black Hills, they made their home in Bonesteel where Yvonne worked at various jobs. She and Ray operated Rays Hiway Service until their retirement in 1985. Ray died October 13, 2005.
Yvonnes life centered on her family and home. She enjoyed baking pies, gardening, canning, fishing, bowling, hunting arrowheads, taking rides in the country, playing cards, and watching the Minnesota Twins.
Yvonne is survived by two sons: Doug Spitzenberger of Bonesteel, and Terry (Ann) Spitzenberger of Brookings; a granddaughter, Rosa (Troy) Glaus, of Parkston; four great-granddaughters: Carol Ann, Jolena, Tia, and Malia; two sisters: Elaine (Ted) Hoffman of Aurora, Colorado, and Lois Leu of Edmonds, Washington; and many nieces and nephews.
Yvonne was preceded in death by her husband, Ray; four brothers: Eldon, Allen, Mick, and Leland Halverson; and a sister, Dolly Hodgins.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 25, 2009 at 2:00 PM at Calvary Bible Church in Bonesteel. Burial will be in the Rosebud Cemetery, Bonesteel. There will be a visitation on Friday from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Clausen Funeral Home in Burke.
