Winnie Iona Serr was born May 28, 1910 in a sod house near Jamison, Nebraska to Fred and Euphemia (Johnson) Hitchcock and she died October 10, 2006 at the Avera Rosebud Country Care Center in Gregory, South Dakota at the age of 96 years, 4 months and 12 days.
Winnie was baptized and confirmed in the Methodist faith. She grew up on the family farm near Jamison. She attended Spotted Tail Country School and graduated from Springview High School in 1930. After graduation she attended nursing school in Omaha, Nebraska, returning to the area to work for Dr. Quinn.
On May 28, 1934, Winnie was united in marriage at Butte, Nebraska to Paul William Serr and to this union three children were born. They continued to live on the Hitchcock farm until 1949 when they moved to what is the present day Serr farm. Paul died in 1971 and she continued to live on the farm until October of 2002 when she moved to Whispering Pines Residential Living Center. In October of 2004 she entered Silver Threads in Gregory before entering the Rosebud Country Care Center a short time later.
Winnie was actively involved in the Jamison United Methodist Church. She taught Sunday School and Bible School. She was also active in 4-H, as well as the Spotted Tail Cemetery Board. She loved to sew, quilt and embroider and loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Winnie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her two sisters: Twila and Bonnie and one son-in-law, Charlie Kasson.
Winnie is survived by her children: Elton and wife Georgia of Newport, NE; Zona of Livingston, IL and LaVon and husband Russ Cox of Wakonda, SD; six grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren; her brother, Curtis and wife Margaret Hitchcock of Armour, SD; and several nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 13, 2006 at 11:00 AM at Clausen Funeral Home in Burke. Burial will be in the Spotted Tail Cemetery, Jamison, NE. Visitation will be Thursday from 4 to 8 PM, with an 8PM prayer service, at the funeral home.
