Vivian Viola Bendig was born April 18, 1923 near Naper, Nebraska in Boyd County on the family farm to Adolph and Viola (Stoltenberg) Bendig.  She died November 10, 2020 at the Aventura Arlington in Arlington, South Dakota at the age of 97 years.

She was united in marriage to Jake Hoy in Herrick, South Dakota on December 22, 1945, they were married 69 years.  Vivian worked for the Gregory County Superintendent for many years before attending Southern Teachers College in Springfield, South Dakota.  She graduated with her teaching degree and taught at many rural schools around the Herrick-Bonesteel and Burke area.  Viv taught grade school in Herrick and then taught 1st grade in Burke for over 25 years.

Viv spent many years sewing, canning, gardening and loved going to Hill City to the cabin.  Many youth camps and numerous couples spent their honeymoons at the cabin thanks to Jake and Viv's generosity.  She was a member of the Herrick American Legion Auxiliary, Eastern Star, Herrick Methodist Church, and the Retired Teachers Association.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Jake, her sister Evelyn and her brother-in-law Clarence Dunn.

She is survived by her son Paul and wife Sherry (Holter) and their children: Jayson (Alyssa) their daughters Bayleigh, Quynn; Danielle (David Lusk) their daughters Mackenzie, Saydee, Kalley and Kaydence; her son Carl and wife Deb (Berens) and their children: LJ (Natasha) and son Kaiden; Casie (Jeff Cady) and their daughter Kristen; her brother Alvin and wife Donna Bendig and a host of relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, November 16, 2020 at 10:00 AM at Clausen Funeral Home in Burke, SD.  Burial will be in the Herrick Cemetery, Herrick, SD.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.
