Obituary

Viola Mae Lund was born December 19, 1917 at Dawson, Nebraska to Charles and Nora (Harris) Stevicks and she died peacefully at her home in Burke, South Dakota, on February 27, 2005 at the age of 87 years, 2 months and 8 days.

In 1919, Vis parents moved from Table Rock, Nebraska, with her eleven brothers and sisters, to a farm northeast of Lucas, South Dakota. Although she was helping on the farm, Vi was still able to graduate from Sunnyside School.

Viola was united in marriage to Harold E. Lund on August 9, 1936 in Burke and to this union two sons and two daughters were born. While living on a farm for 16 years in the Lucas community, she enjoyed farming, gardening, canning, cooking for the thrashers, and playing on the Lucas womens softball team.

In 1952, Viola, Harold and their children moved to Burke, where she has resided for the last 53 years. Besides her major role as a wife and mother, Vi had many careers in her active life: cooking at a small caf, making yard decorations, painting, wallpapering, and cleaning. But she really had a great time working at the Hillcrest Motel for 20 years, where she formed many lasting relationships. After her retirement, Viola enjoyed her grandchildren, flowers, letter writing, bread baking, and talking on the phone. She would call her neighbors on her mail route, when the mail had arrived. Mom told us, You kids better put a phone in with me so I can pester my relatives, neighbors and friends.

Viola was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, 5 sisters and 4 brothers.

Viola is survived by her two daughters: Shirley (Brad) Lear of Sioux Falls, SD and Barbara (James) Anstine of Jacksonville, FL; two sons: Larry Lund of Haverhill, MA and Richard (Dava) Lund of Sioux Falls, SD; eight grandchildren: Tim and Sue Lear of Sioux Falls, SD; Paula (Kenny) Rothwell of Merrimac, MA; Karen (John) Fuccione of Haverhill, MA; Amy Lund of Haverhill, MA; and David, Rick and Isaac Lund of Sioux Falls, SD; four great-grandchildren: Jared and McKenzie Rothwell and Marissa and John Fuccione; one sister, Lucille Fuhrman of Burke, SD; one brother, Roy Stevicks of Gregory, SD; and a host of relatives and friends.

So vivacious and outgoing, Viola will definitely be missed.
