Vernon Doyle Wells was born on September 26, 1928 at Spencer Nebraska to Walter and Martha Wells.
His childhood years and school years were in Spencer, Nebraska. He worked for area ranchers, farmers and construction jobs. He joined the service in January of 1952 doing his basic training in Missouri and then on the Fort Hood, Texas. From then he was sent to Korea where he saw lot of action. At one point when they were overran White Horse, Mt. it was each man for himself. He was missing in action for a short time and just by chance wondered into an American Camp. One of his buddies stated that he knew they would never get you, I prayed. He was discharged in Nov. 1954.
On June 26, 1954 he married Dorothy Creekmur at Burke, South Dakota. They moved to Burke in 1965 and worked for the city of Burke until 1976 when he retired due to health issues. Vernon and Dorothy raised their family plus worked with Board & Parole and foster parents. After his retirement he spent time doing what he enjoyed spending time with his family, grandchildren and great grandchildren. His other free time was spent, pheasant and deer hunting, fishing, mowing yards and announcing ballgames.
Vernon leaves to mourn his wife, Dorothy, his daughters Eugenia and husband Jim Furhman of Bassett, Nebraska; Regenia and husband Jerry Shanahan of Burke, South Dakota; sons, Kevin Wells and wife Pam of Lake Andes, South Dakota; and Ron Bruns of Burke, South Dakota. He had 12 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and one brother, Sheridan Wells and wife Helen of Spencer, NE. Also many nieces and nephews.
Welcoming Vernon in heaven are his parents, Walter and Martha Wells, four brothers, Delwyn, Burnell, Orlyn and Orvin, a son, Chance Wade, a grandson, James Allen and a daughter-in-law, Ann Bruns.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 9, 2010 at 10:00 AM at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Burke. Burial will be in the Rosebud Cemetery in Bonesteel, SD. There will be a rosary on Sunday at 5:00 PM at the church. Visitation will be one hour prior to both services on at the church.
