Obituary

Vernal Howard Glynn was born November 25, 1921, on the Whetstone near the Missouri River, north of Bonesteel, South Dakota to Michael and Gladys (Qualm) Glynn. He was called home to be with his Lord on October 23, 2007 from the Pine View Good Samaritan Center in Valentine, Nebraska at the age of 85 years, 10 months and 28 days.

Vernal moved with his family to Mellette County when he was four years old. He attended elementary school at the Cedar Butte School District, and graduated from White River High School in 1939. He then attended South Dakota State College for three years before enlisting in the Navy.

Vernal was united in marriage to Flerida Turgeon on January 10, 1945 in Winner, South Dakota and to this union two daughters were born: Marvelyn and Carol.

While living in Bonesteel, Vernal had a career with the Postal Service for over 38 years. He was involved in many community activities such as: Clerk of the Bonesteel Independent School District for 12 years; City Auditor for the City of Bonesteel for 8 years; member of the Bonesteel Fire Department for 20 years; member of the American Legion for 63 years, serving as commander and various other offices; and member of the Masonic Lodge for 54 years, serving as Master and several other offices.

Vernal was a part time linotype operator for the Bonesteel Enterprise from 1955 until 1966. He worked for the Soil Conservation District in Burke for 2 years; and also sold Kent Feed for many years. He was a member of the St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Bonesteel since 1953. He loved to garden, play cards, fish, golf and spend time with his family and friends.

Vernal is survived by his daughters: Marvelyn Manke of Euless, TX and Carol Klug and husband Stan of Burwell, NE; his brother, Art Glynn and wife Joyce of Rapid City, SD; his sister, Shirley Spain of Albuquerque, NM; Rosie Glynn of White River, SD; Wilbur Turgeon and wife Delma of Bullhead City, AZ; six grandchildren: Kerry Odenbach of Jacksonville, FL; Carmen Cox of Fort Worth, TX; Lemars Manke of Pierre, SD; Lavonne Smith and husband Paul of Euless, TX; Arlita Hamling and husband Aaron of Valentine, NE; and Craig Klug and wife Jonda of Burwell, NE; 12 great-grandchildren: Shawndraya Cox, Cory and Chantel Manke, Chase, Kylie and Kaiden Smith, Bailey, Rylee, Thomas and Allyson Hamling, Casandra Klundt and Tawny Harvey, along with a host of other relatives and friends.

Vernal was preceded in death by his parents, Michael and Gladys; his wife Flerida, and one brother, Derrill.

Funeral services will be Monday, October 29, 2007 at 11:00 AM at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Bonesteel. Burial will be in the Rosebud Cemetery of Bonesteel. Visitation will be Sunday from 4 to 8 PM at Clausen Funeral Home in Burke.
