Verna Jons

Verna (Nordquist) Jons was born to Elmer and Hazel (Arnold) Nordquist on October 31, 1922, at the family farm near Anoka, NE. Verna attended elementary school at Anoka, NE, later moving to Butte, NE where she graduated from high school in 1939 at the age of 16 with highest honors . She worked as a secretary and bookkeeper in the Butte, Spencer, NE and Burke, SD areas for many years.

As a young girl, she gave her life to Christ at a Pentecostal revival in Anoka, NE and held strong to her faith in Jesus throughout her life. On August 5, 1952, Verna married Alvin Jons and moved to a farm near Bonesteel, SD where they farmed, ran a dairy for several years and where they semi-retired.

Verna was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She loved to cook delicious meals for her family and having her family around her for the holidays was the great joy of her life. She loved music and sang and played the piano and organ. Verna was a woman who loved God with all her heart, and she loved being in His house whenever she could. She has left a godly legacy for her family for which they are eternally grateful.

To their union were born three children: Jonelle (Roger) Wendt of Kearney, NE; Debra (Bobby) Lawler of Carrollton, TX; Joel (Patty) Jons of Bonesteel, SD, six grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

She is also survived by her sister Helen Friedrich of Palm Springs, CA.

Verna was preceded in death by her parents, a sister Maxine and a great-grandchild Lila Mae Gilmer.
