Vera Mary Skalla was born August 5, 1930 to Richard and Bertha (Derner) King on a farm north of Bonesteel, South Dakota.  She died January 11, 2018 in Burke, South Dakota at the age of 87 years.

Vera attended school in Bonesteel through the 8th grade and then worked various jobs around the Bonesteel area.  During this time, she met Lester Skalla, and they were united in marriage at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church on August 25, 1948.  She and Lester had three children: Kathy, Danny and Gary.  They farmed north of Bonesteel until 1967 when they purchased the Pool Hall (Les's Bar).  They operated the bar for 25 years.  Lester always said if there was any trouble in the bar all he had to do was to holler "Vera" and things got taken care of quickly!

Although Vera was tiny in size, she was a mighty hard worker.  She milked cows, raised chickens for the freezer, gardened and canned, and kept a very clean house.  Spring and fall house cleaning were annual things in her home!

Vera is survived by her three children: Kathy of Casa Grande, AZ / Rapid City, SD; Danny of Sioux Falls, SD; and Gary (Donna) of Burke, SD; her grandchildren: Mike (Kady) Schmitz, Cory (Ariel) Skalla, Dusty (Brent) Carter, Casey Skalla, Emily (Clinton) Benter, Brad (Heather) Skalla and Jeff Skalla, as well as thirteen great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester; her parents; her sister, Irene Camin and son-in-law, Gerry Payne.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Sharon and the staff of the TLC Assisted Living Facility for the wonderful care Mom received from all of you.  The care Mom received was appreciated and the family will forever be grateful for your kindness and guidance.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, January 16, 2018 at 10:30 AM at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Bonesteel, SD.  Burial will be in the St. Mary's Cemetery, Bonesteel.  Visitation will be held prior to the service at the church on Tuesday.
