Theresa Koenig was born March 26, 1918 at Howells, Nebraska to Frank and Emma (Wolff) Ulrich. She passed away November 25, 2012 at the Wagner Avera Community Hospital at the age of ninety-four years, seven months, and 29 days.
Theresa was baptized at St. Henry's Catholic Church, a country church, near Leigh, NE. The family lived at Howells and Osmond, NE; and then she moved with her parents and sisters to the Burke, Bonesteel and Fairfax areas where their parents farmed. She attended Catholic schools in Burke and Bonesteel, later attending high school in Fairfax. Theresa worked in O'Neill, NE for a family and in the Gregory and Burke clinics and hospitals for Dr. E. Edward Studenberg for six months and Dr. Robert J. Quinn for two years. She did bookkeeping, clinic nursing, worked hospital floors and assisted in surgery during World War ll due to the shortage of nurses.
Theresa married Joseph V. Koenig on October 4, 1944 at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Fairfax, SD. They made their home on their farm east of Fairfax. They had four children: Mary, Eugene, Maurice, and Carl. Her husband, Joe, passed away June 29, 1986, and Theresa continued to live on the farm until she moved to the Wagner Good Samaritan Home in April 2010. She spent her days caring for her family and enjoyed reading and doing embroidery work. Theresa was an active member of St. Anthony's Altar Society and a member of the Fairfax American Legion Auxiliary. She especially enjoyed the time spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren at their activities and visits.
Theresa is survived by her four children: Mary (Clinton) Vatsaas, Anoka, MN; Eugene (Marveleen) Koenig, Spencer,NE; Maurice (Anita) Koenig, O'Neill,NE; and Carl (Betsy) Koenig, Fairfax,SD; 23 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and their families.
Theresa was preceded in death by her husband, parents, older siblings; Hilda, and infant brother; Paul and younger sister; Regina Koenig. She will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, November 28, 2012 at 10:30 AM at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Fairfax. Burial will be in the St. Anthony's Catholic Cemetery, Fairfax. There will be a rosary on Tuesday at 7:30 PM at the Church. Visitation will be one hour prior to both services at the church.
