Obituary

Ted Schmitz, 78, of Bonesteel died Saturday September 14, 2013 with his family by his side.

Ted was born May 31, 1935 to John T. and Helen (Derner) Schmitz the seventh of eleven children.

Ted enlisted in the U.S. Navy in June 1952 serving aboard the PT-15 and the USS Agerholm D.D.826. He was honorably discharged May 1956 with the rank of BM3.

Ted married Dorain (Jons) on August 29, 1957 and made their home in Bonesteel. He went to work for Rosebud Electric in 1959 and retired in 1997, after 38 years of service. Ted's interest in life centered on his family, following his two daughters through high school and college sports, and later his grandchildren. Ted was a member of the Bonesteel Immaculate Conception Church. Served on the Bonesteel City Council, Bonesteel School Board, a member of the Bonesteel Fire Department, American Legion and V.F.W. Ted was a lifelong fisherman, bowler, golfer, camper and played baseball in his younger days.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife Dorain and daughters, Bev (Arne) Svarstad Aberdeen, SD and Marilyn (Mark) Schmitz-Stadem Baltic, SD.; 8 grandchildren Kody (Nicole) Schochenmaier, Riley (John) Pfeiffer, Kayden Svarstad, and Jenna Svarstad of Aberdeen, Jay Schochenmaier of Lafayette, LA, Christopher Svarstad of Yankton, SD, and Nathan and Drew Stadem of Baltic, SD. Four Brothers Ray of Naper NE, Dick of Gregory SD, John (Judy)of Stuart NE, Ralph (Robin) of Mission SD; Two sisters: Agnes (Ray) Engelhaupt of Spencer NE and Alice (Charlie) Fuchs of Pickstown SD

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Joe and Bernard. Two sisters Cecelia Schwaller and Dolly Bechtold.

Memorial services will be held on Wednesday, September 18, 2013 at 10:30 AM at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Bonesteel, SD. There will be a rosary on Tuesday at 7 PM at the church. Visitation will be one hour prior to both services at the church. Burial will be in the Black Hills National Cemetery, Sturgis, at a later date.
