IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Sylvia Agnes
Hausmann
November 30, 1920 – June 18, 2019
Sylvia Agnes (Opbroek) Hausmann was born November 30, 1920 to Henry and Margaret (Ritz) Opbroek. She passed away on June 18, 2019.
Sylvia was born on the family farm east of Fairfax, S.D. and was the 9th of 14 children in Henry and Margaret's family. As a young girl, she attended Star Valley School and graduated from the eighth grade. In her early adult life, she was employed by Anna Donohue in Bonesteel, where she met Ed who was also employed by the Donohue family. She was also employed by Monsignor Dube in Fairfax as a housekeeper.
On May 1, 1941, she married Edward Hausmann in Fairfax. Due to destruction from a fire at St. Anthony's Church, Ed and Sylvia were married in a Catholic ceremony at the Congregational Church. They began married life in Bonesteel, S.D, and to this union, three children were born: Dennis, Thomas and Mary.
In 1943, Ed was drafted into the Army, and while he was away, Sylvia apprenticed under Lola Fedde and became a beautician. Later, she was employed at Brown's grocery store and part-time for the Rural Electric Association. She enjoyed quilting and playing cards and was in PTA, Altar Society and Band Parents. When her children were raised and away from home, Sylvia babysat for Jamie and Shawn Schochenmaier.
While living at home, her door was always open, and she enjoyed the role of hostess for visitors from coast to coast. In 2014, Sylvia moved to Silver Threads independent living facility in Gregory, S. D. and in 2018 transferred to assisted living. She enjoyed visits from old friends and made many new friends at the facility.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Ed, six sisters, five brothers and one grandchild (Andrew).
She is survived by her children—Denny (Nancy) Hausmann of Broomfield, CO, Tom (Janis) Hausmann of Yankton, SD, and Mary (Jim) Fernandez of Aurora, CO, 7 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by one brother (Henry), one sister (Florence), and numerous nieces, nephews and close friends.
In lieu of flowers, donations to a Sylvia Hausmann memorial may be sent to the Clausen Funeral Home, 226 E. Eighth Street, Burke, SD 57523.
