Sophie K. McCarthy was born November 4, 1921 at home to Chris and Paulina (Fuhrer) Serr and she died January 2, 2018 at her home near Jamison, Nebraska at the age 96 years.

Sophie, along with her siblings Julia and John, attended school in Naper, Nebraska as well as the Spotted Tail School near Jamison.  Upon completion of her schooling, Sophie worked for area families as well as on the farm.

When she was 18 years old, she was united in marriage to Joe McCarthy on February 27, 1940 at O'Neill, Nebraska and to this union three sons were born.  Joe and Sophie lived south of Burke, South Dakota for a short time before moving to Iowa.  In 1944 they returned to the area and settled on a farm southwest of Jamison.  They rented the farm from Gid and Lottie Hamon until finally purchasing the farm in 1956.  She remained on the farm until the time of her death.

Sophie and Joe farmed until Joe's death in 1988.  She continued to farm and milk a few cows for several years.  She loved to garden and tend to her chickens.  Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren had a special place in her heart.  She also enjoyed playing pitch with the card club and dancing at the Carlock Dance Hall.

Sophie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Joe; her son, Larry; her daughter-in-law, Dorothy, her brother, John and her sister, Julia.

Sophie is survived by her son, David and wife Lisa of Jamison, Nebraska; her son LeRoy and wife Maxine of Naper, Nebraska; eight grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Jan McCarthy of Holdrege, Nebraska and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 8, 2018 at 1:30 PM at Clausen Funeral Home in Burke.  Burial will be in the Spotted Tail Cemetery, Jamison.  Visitation will be held on Monday prior to the services at the funeral home.
