Obituary
Shirley Bernadine Baker was born July 13, 1935 at Neligh, Nebraska to BA and Violet (Humphrey) Clark and she died April 30, 2014 at the Rosebud Country Care Center in Gregory, South Dakota at the age of 78 years.
In 1936 the family moved to South Dakota and lived in Winner, Sioux Falls and Fairfax until 1954. Then Shirley explored the United States for a year. On October 29, 1955 she was united in marriage to Dale Baker. They moved to Cheyenne, Wyoming where Dale was stationed in the United States Air Force.
They were blessed with their first child, a son, Bernadean, the following year. When Dale was sent to Germany, Shirley stayed with family in Fairfax, South Dakota until his return in 1958.
They moved to Rapid City, South Dakota in March of 1958. In 1960 they moved to Vandenberg AFB in California. While there, their three youngest children, Daniel, Jacqueline and William, were born. Shirley was active in the Wives Club as well as owning and operating her own ceramic shop.
In 1964, after Dale's military service was over, they moved to Santa Cruz, California. When not being a homemaker, Shirley held various positions with various companies doing everything from telephone operator, waitressing, bartending and sakes person at Leask's Department Store until her retirement in 1981.
Dale and Shirley moved to Watsonville, California in 1981 and lived there until they moved to San Juan Bateista, California in 1985. In May of 1987, Dale retired and they spent the next year traveling. In 1988 they set their roots down in Burke, South Dakota. In February of 2003, Shirley took up residency in the Rosebud Country Care Center in Gregory. Shirley and Dale continued to take weekend trips until their health prevented it in 2012. Shirley lost her battle with Parkinson's on April 30, 2014.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Patsy; her brother, Alvin and an infant son, Dennis.
Shirley is survived by her husband of 58 years, Dale; their four children: Bernadean (Susan), Daniel (Tunde), Jacqueline (Ken) and William. They also have eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
