Obituary

Shelli Rae Frey was born miraculously into this world on February 14, 1963 at Burke, South Dakota to Gayus and Dixie (Deffenbaugh) Frey. She died on March 24, 2006 at her home in Burke at the age of 43 years, 1 month and 10 days.

Shelli was born with spina bifida and underwent numerous surgeries as a child and throughout her life. She was the March of Dimes South Dakota State Poster Child for two years, 1969 and 1970. She was chosen to compete for the National March of Dimes Poster Child, coming in fourth place.

Shelli started school in 1969, at the age of seven, at Crippled Children's Hospital and School in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. She attended school there through the sixth grade, only coming home to visit twice a year. She was enrolled in the Burke School District her seventh grade year. She attended High School in Burke, graduating with the class of 1982.

Shelli enjoyed crocheting and cross stitching. She made many beautiful afghans and baby blankets. She also loved playing cards and putting together puzzles any chance she had. Baking for family, friends and community members was Shellis favorite way to spend time, always trying delicious new recipes. She was a member of the Union Baptist Church in Burke, and was a Jaycette in the mid 1980s.

Shelli was the most independent person considering her condition. Always wanting to do things on her own. In 1999 she became even more independent when she learned to drive. From that day on walking downtown was not an option. Her cheery smile and friendly Hello will be missed by all.

Shelli was preceded in death by her grandparents: David Frey and Fred and Ruth Deffenbaugh.

Shelli is survived by her mother, Dixie Frey of Burke, SD; her father, Gayus Frey of Herrick, SD; her sisters: Lori (Lyle) Vakiner of Gregory, SD and Dana (Ken) Anderson of Valentine, NE; niece, McKenzie Anderson; nephews: Justin and Cody Vosika and Jayce Anderson; great niece, Courtney Vosika; great nephew, Jordan Vosika; her grandmother, Edna Frey; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, March 29, 2006 at 10:30 AM at Union Baptist Church in Burke. Burial will be in the Graceland Cemetery, Burke. There will be a prayer service on Tuesday at 7:30 PM at the Church. Visitation will be one hour prior to both services at the church.
