Obituary

Ruth Evans Petersen was born May 30, 1919 near Dallas, South Dakota to James and Hattie Evans and passed away December 14, 2006 at the Burke Community Memorial Hospital. Ruth was baptized at the St. Paul Church near Norfolk, Nebraska and was confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Colome, South Dakota. Her faith in the Lord has remained steadfast to the end.

Ruth attended eight years of rural grade school and four years of high school at Dallas, South Dakota. She graduated from Southern Normal Teachers College at Springfield with a two year teaching certificate. Her teaching started in various rural schools in Tripp County and ended with teaching 5th and 6th grades at Burke Elementary School.

Ruth was united in marriage on August 27, 1942 at Zion Lutheran Church in Colome, South Dakota to Orris Petersen. She was employed with a civil service job at Camp Crowder, Missouri while Orris was in the service. Upon returning from the service in 1945, Ruth, along with Orris, built and operated what was known as Petersen Produce, a cream, egg and feed store. On March 29, 1949, they celebrated the birth of their son, Greg. Orris and Ruth operated the feed store together for nearly 30 years, working side-by-side until they sold their business in 1972. The next 25 years were spent enjoying their small farm. Ruth enjoyed the time she had to do her favorite things in life, gardening, canning and raising flowers. In the 1980s she really treasured the addition of her two grandchildren, James and Courtney. She promptly taught them both to play pitch. They became her two favorite partners. In the 1990s, Ruths life changed as she was afflicted with Alzheimers Disease. It took her memory, but not her loving smile. She was a loving mother, grandmother and friend. She will be missed by her family and many friends.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and one brother. She is survived by her husband, Orris, her son Greg and wife Kathy, her two grandchildren, James and Courtney and one sister, Esther Evans of Petersburg, Alaska.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 18, 2006 at 10:00 AM at Grace Lutheran Church in Burke. Burial will be in the Graceland Cemetery, Burke. Visitation will be Sunday from 4 to 8 PM, with a prayer service on Sunday at 7:00 PM at Clausen Funeral Home in Burke.
