Rose Emily Riley, the foster daughter of William And Emily (Mead) Riley was born March 1, 1912 at Geddes, South Dakota and she died March 25, 2007 at the Community Memorial Hospital in Burke, South Dakota at the age of 95 years.
Rose was practically raised in a school house, as her mother often taught and lived in the school house. She graduated from St. Annes High School in Geddes in 1928 and from Notre Dame Junior College in Mitchell, South Dakota in 1930.
Rose followed in her mothers footsteps and became a teacher, a job she loved for 19 years. She began her teaching career at the Mulehead School north of Bonesteel. She met and started dating Curley Haisch in 1931. She served as Charles Mix County Auditor for two terms and as Deputy Auditor for several years. She was the township clerk for many years until blindness forced her to resign.
On June 26, 1958, Rose was united in marriage to Hollis Curley Haisch. They made their home at the Mulehead Ranch until illness forced them to move into the Haisch Haus, and later to the Burke Hospital.
Rose was very active in the community. She was a member of the Star Extension Club and the Rosebud Rancherettes for many years. She was instrumental in establishing the Mulehead Scholarships at the Bonesteel-Fairfax School. These award were very important to her because of her love of teaching and her desire to educate young people. Rose and Curley were inducted into the South Dakota Hall of Fame in the Unsung Heroes and Good Hearts Category in 1998. They were well known in the area for their unselfish generosity.
Rose cooked for many goose hunters and for all of the hired hands at the ranch, as well as for anyone who just happened to stop by. She always had the coffee pot on and she made everyone feel welcome.
Rose enjoyed having fun and had a great sense of humor. She loved to laugh and have a good time. She loved her pets as well as her garden. She never had any children of her own, but she was like a mother to many.
Rose was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband, Curley of Bonesteel, South Dakota; her sisters-in-law: Martha Mashek of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Ruth Haisch of Sioux Falls, South Dakota and Leigh Anne Haisch of Mitchell, South Dakota as well as several nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
