Rita Johanna (Nies) Pistulka, daughter of John & Sophia (Opbroek) Nies, was born on November 13, 1924 on the family farm southwest of Bonesteel. She passed away on June 23, 2009 at the Rosebud Avera Healthcare Center in Gregory SD at the age of 84.
Rita was the eleventh child in a family of thirteen. She grew up working on the family farm helping her dad, who referred to her as his chore girl. Rita and her sisters loved to sing and dance, and always made their chores fun.
On June 21st, 1944 Rita married Robert J. Pistulka, the man she spotted from the church choir loft and told her friend Hes the one Im going to marry! SHE DID! And they spent the next 65 years together. To their union four children were born. Bob & Rita raised their family on their farm north of Fairfax, where they lived until they retired in 1984. Then they moved to Fairfax where they lived across the street from the church.
Rita always sang in the church choir and was a member of St. Anthonys Altar Society. She was a woman of great faith and instilled it in her children and grandchildren. One of Ritas favorite pastimes was quilting; she spent many hours creating quilts for family and friends. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
Rita was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Mary, Leone, Lorene, Clara, Gertrude, Esther, and Genevieve, brothers Gerhard, and Charles and a granddaughter, Paula.
Left to celebrate her life are her husband, Robert; her sons and their wives, Eugene (Connie) of Fairfax, SD; Ronald (Carolyn) of Holdrege, NE; Kevin (Mary) of Yankton, SD. Her daughter Roberta (Roger) Witt of Bonesteel, SD. Her sisters Catherine Thomas of Belmont, WI; Rachel Hausmann of Waconia, MN and Alda Mae Koenig of Corona CA; as well as 12 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren; and her many nieces & nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 26, 2009 at 10:30 AM at St. Anthonys Catholic Church in Fairfax. Burial will be in the St. Anthonys Catholic Cemetery, Fairfax. There will be a rosary on Thursday at 7:30 PM at the Church. Visitation will be one hour prior to both services at the Church.
