Raymond Donald Fuhrer was born December 7, 1923 at his parents home near Bonesteel, South Dakota to Herman and Lucy (Brunemier) Fuhrer and he died October 15, 2015 at the Butte Healthcare Center at Butte, Nebraska at the age of 91 years. As a young boy his family moved to a farm south of Naper, Nebraska. Ray attended school in the Naper District, graduating from Naper High School in 1941. He then worked for various farmers in the area. He enlisted in the US Army in 1945. He served in World War II in the Philippines and with the Occupational Force in Japan. He was honorably discharged in 1946. In 1948 he began working for the Nebraska Department of Roads in the Jamison and Naper area. He served this area until his retirement in 1988. He was an active lifelong member of the Naper VFW and also served on the Naper Town Board. Ray enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. Two of his favorite things to do were fishing and playing cards with his Naper friends. Ray was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Theola; an infant son, Raymond; four brothers: Ben, Bob, Harry and Allen; three sisters: Lila and two infant sisters: Irene and Betty. Ray is survived by his wife of 50 years, Mary; his children: Lonny (Lisa) of Watertown, SD; Lisa (Clay) Eide of Valentine, NE; Eileen (Marv) Schmitz of Bonesteel, SD; Karen (Calvin) Kelly of Gibbon, NE; Jim (Sue) Berg of Madras, OR; one sister, Gert Ahlers; two brothers: Lyle Fuhrer and Frank Fuhrer; 18 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren. Ray will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, October 22, 2015 at 10:30 AM at the Ss Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Butte, NE. Burial will be in Catholic Cemetery of Naper. There will be a rosary on Wednesday at 7:00 PM at the church in Butte. Visitation will be one hour prior to both of the services at the church.
