Philomena (Philly) Elizabeth was born on July 25, 1919." She was born to William and Cecelia (Ventiecher) Schmitz." Philly passed away on Tuesday, May 17, 2011 at the Burke Hospital in Burke, South Dakota at the age of 91 years, 9 months and 22 days.

Philly grew up on a farm near the Bonesteel, South Dakota area. She attended the Catholic school in Bonesteel until the 8th grade. She lived on the family farm until she was united in marriage to Edwin John Koenig on October 1, 1940 at the Immaculate Conception Church in Bonesteel, South Dakota. Together they farmed and raised their children.

Philomena enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren. Her door was always open to family and friends. She enjoyed cooking and baking. She was noted for her chocolate angel food cakes, doughnuts, and caramel rolls. Philly was always ready for a good game of cards.

Philly is survived by her children JoAnn Heimes, Yankton, South Dakota, Janet (Jerry) Goodman, Bonesteel, South Dakota, Ronnie (Nila) Koenig, Fairfax, South Dakota, Bonnie Koenig, Minnetonka, Minnesota, Randy (Lori) Koening, Fairfax, South Dakota, 16 grandchildren, 41 great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, sister-in-laws Agnus Grow, Glenolden, Pennsylvania and Lenora (Frank) Kirwan, Gesham, Oregon, as well as several nieces, nephews and friends.

Philly was preceded in death by her husband Edwin, her parents, an infant son, eight brothers; Jack, Bill, Tony, Clarence, Eddie, Frank, Norbert and Joe, two sisters; Mary and Tillie, sister-in-laws and brother-in-laws and one grand child.
