Paul Charles Rust passed away on January 21, 2008 at the Burke Community Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. Paul was born on November 8, 1925 to Charles and Agatha (Viek) Rust. He grew up and attended grade school and high school in the Herrick area. Paul enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in November 1943 and was stationed on Saipan and Guam during WWII. He was discharged from the service in January 1946.

After completing his time in the service, Paul lived in Texas and California doing construction work. He returned to Herrick in 1954 and began farming 3 miles northeast of Herrick. On April 18, 1959 he was united in marriage to Pauline Marie Engelmeyer at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Burke. To this union four children were born: Paula, Phyllis, John and Joe.

Paul and Pauline engaged in farming with their chief interest in raising and milking registered Holstein cattle. Paul was active in local 4-H clubs hosting judging schools, the South Dakota Holstein Association showing cattle, was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and belonged to the Herrick American Legion. He enjoyed being on the farm, working with the land and taking pride in his work.

Paul is survived by his children: Paula and husband Salvador of Elk Grove, CA: Phyllis of Aurora, CO, John and wife Kim of Winnemucca, NV; and Joe and wife Lori of Yankton, SD; nine grandchildren: Jennifer and Paul Wright of Aurora, CO, Rory Casale of Middleton, ID; Kelby Casale of Reno, NV; Elizabeth, Ben and Alexandra (Lexi) Rust of Yankton, SD; Austin and Alex Gonzalez of Elk Grove, CA;, and four great- grandchildren: Daraja Kaku of Aurora, CO; Anthoney, Willie and Carlee Casale of Middleton, ID and his sisters Rita Zimmerman and Maxine Welbes of Houston, TX: his brothers Robert Rust of Houston, TX and Duyane Rust of Bryan, TX; as well as several sisters-inlaw, nieces and nephews.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Agatha Rust, his wife Pauline; infant sister Patricia Rust and sister Helen Tietgen ; and sister in law Beverly Rust; brothers in law John and Joe Engelmeyer, Otto Tietgen, Frank Zimmerman, and Louie Welbes; niece Linda Rust and nephew Kermit Allum.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 28, 2008 at 10:00 AM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Burke, SD. Burial will be in the Herrick Cemetery, Herrick, SD. There will be a rosary on Sunday at 4:30 PM at the Church. Visitation will begin one hour prior to both services at the church.
