Olive Josephine (Gibson) Wilson was born July 23, 1905 at Keya Paha, Nebr. to Francis Gibson and Euphemia (Wagner) Gibson. Olive was the seventh child of eleven. In 1906 the family moved to Carlock, S.D.
Her parents homesteaded in South Dakota they purchased the store at Brocksburg, Neb in 1912. Olive worked at the store, helped in the Post Office and in the Telephone Office Exchange Keyboard for the community. She helped the neighbors with housework, gave a lot of haircuts, did lots of sewing, and did interior painting for anyone needing such help. Olive enjoyed playing the organ for church and Sunday school and attending dances that were held in the upper level of the store.
She took over the job of Postmaster of the Brocksburg Post Office when her sister,
Effie retired and held this position until 1953.
On October 3, 1953, she married Darwin Wilson and moved to Herrick, S.D. where they farmed. Several years later they moved to a farmstead north of Burke, SD where they continued to farm. In 1971 they retired and moved into Burke. Darwin passed away on May 15, 1975.
Olive continued to live in Burke, SD until July of 2002 when she temporarily moved to Tyndall, SD to be near her sister, Floy in the nursing home. Upon Floys death in December of 2002, she returned to Burke. She moved to the Avera Care Center in Yankton, S.D. in November of 2005.
Olive spent her time helping care for her sisters and enjoying her family. She also enjoyed gardening, hosting card parties, and playing the piano. She also loved to cook, insisting on cooking for any company that would come to visit.
Olive passed away December 17, 2005, at the Avera Care Center in Yankton, S.D. at the age of 100 years 5 months and 24 days.
Olive was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, five sisters, five brothers, one step-son Edwin Wilson, one step-daughter, Dorothy Osnes, one grand-daughter, Joyce Wilsey and two nephews, Harold Bud Gibson and Merle Gibson and son-in-law Naven Boes.
She is survived by four nieces, Jean Morrison, Lincoln, NE, Shirley Gortemaker, Oshkosh, NE, Ruth Most, Broomfield, CO, Joan Bogut, Pittsburgh, PA, two nephews, Larry Gibson, Aurora, CO, and Lonnie Gibson, Oklahoma City, OK, five granddaughters, Twila Combs, Dallas SD; Lorna Whiting, Gregory, SD; Kristi Cerney, Rapid City, SD; Pam Osnes, Concord, CA and Susan Beringer, Yankton, SD; seven grandsons, Brad Boes, Hamill, SD; Doug Boes, Ft. Pierre, SD; Tim Boes, Johnston, Iowa; Earl Wilson, Tyndall, SD; Edwin and Donald Wilson, Spearfish, SD; John Osnes, Black Hawk, SD, several cousins and many friends.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, December 22, 2005 at 10:30 AM at Clausen Funeral Home in Burke. Burial will be in the Herrick Cemetery, Herrick, SD. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4 to 8 PM, with a 7:30 PM prayer service, at the funeral home.
