Olive Juanita Sargent was born April 4, 1922 at Thermopolis, Wyoming to John E and Blanche (Brown) Hammett, Sr. and she died February 4, 2016 at the Gregory Healthcare Center in Gregory, South Dakota at the age of 93 years.
She was the oldest of six children. At the age of five her family moved to Upper Lodge Grass Creek near Lodge Grass, Montana. Her father, John, was a cowboy and worked on various large ranches. They moved often to various cow camps. Olive attended several country schools while growing up, to which she rode horse back. She attended Lodge Grass High School in Lodge Grass, Montana. On December 12, 1940, Olive married Hollis Wayland Sargent at the Baptist Church in Hardin, Montana. They traveled to Dixon, South Dakota to visit Hollis's mother, Adelein and step-father, William Moore and family.
In 1947, Olive and Hollis moved to Bonesteel, South Dakota where they worked on a ranch. In 1958, they moved to Gregory, South Dakota where they farmed until 1961. They then moved to Burke, South Dakota where they continued to farm. They later sold out and purchased a home in Burke. Olive continued to live in their home even after the loss of her husband.
Olive was preceded in death by her husband, Hollis; her daughter, Betty Willis; her parents, John and Blanche; her sister, Inabell Snyder; her brother, John E Hammett, Jr.; and her sisters-in-law: Mary Ruth Hammett and Elsie Hammett; her brother-in-law, Alfred Stevens; her son in-law: Will Oliver; and a great-great-grandson, Brayden Worden.
Olive is survived by her children: Mary (Ivan) Wille of Dallas, SD; Maggie (Norbert) Holmberg of Gregory, SD; Juanita Oliver of Minatare, NE; a special niece, Dorothy (Charles) Kemery of Wagner, SD; 12 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren; 21 great-great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, February 10, 2016 at 10:30 AM at Clausen Funeral Home in Burke. Burial will be in the Lucas Cemetery, Lucas, SD. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
