Obituary

Neil Arthur Burkinshaw was born on January 21, 1937, in Burke SD to parents Floyd Arthur Burkinshaw and Maude Josephine (Johnson) Burkinshaw. He grew up on the Burkinshaw ranch near Jamison NE and took up that occupation. His wife Velma was also from a ranching background and joined him in that endeavor.
Neil attended elementary school in a one-room country schoolhouse near his parents' ranch. His mother had been a teacher at that school prior to her marriage to his father. Neil attended high school in Burke SD where he played trombone in marching band. He graduated in 1954. He married Velma Inglett in August of 1955.
A passion for aviation awakened in Neil at an early age. He obtained a private pilot license, and his airplane became a vital part of his ranching operation. He delighted in making certain that each of his grandchildren had their first airplane ride at an early age. He was a bit of a daredevil: He flew under the Platte-Winner bridge several times. But he was always practical: he only did it in the winter when the Missouri River was frozen over so he could make an emergency landing on the ice if necessary.
Neil was a keen marksman, an avid hunter, and a staunch defender of the Second Amendment. The proper use of firearms was another passion he enjoyed sharing with his children and grandchildren.
Neil was a lifelong and active member of the Jamison United Methodist Church where his mother had been pianist for many years. Neil was a lay leader, filling in for the pastor when he was gone. Singing was another of his many talents. He sang frequently for church and for funerals.
Neil took his civic responsibilities seriously. He took the Dale Carnegie course and was involved with Toastmasters to enhance his public speaking skills. He was a member of the school board. He served for many years as an election judge.
Neil was the type of person who made friends easily. He was always kind and friendly to all who crossed his path.
Neil was preceded in death by his son, Bryan, and by his sister, Vendla Musil. He is survived by his wife: Velma June (Inglett) Burkinshaw. He is also survived by his sons, Dana and Clark, and by his daughter, Lisa Hart. Neil has 11 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, and one-of-a-kind grandpa.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 9, 2020 at 11:00 AM at the United Methodist Church in Burke. Burial will be in the Spotted Tail Cemetery, Jamison. There will be a visitation one hour prior to the services at the church.
