Obituary

Monica Mary Qualm was born May 4, 1931 at Sioux City, Iowa and died August 15, 2021 at the Community Memorial Hospital in Burke, South Dakota  at the age of 90 years.

Monica and her mother, Dorothy, moved to Gregory in 1932.  She grew up in Gregory and attended both elementary and High school, graduating in 1949.   She then began working for a carpenter shop.

A year later she met Donald Qualm and they were married December 18, 1950.  The young couple made their first home in Bonesteel, South Dakota.   Donald spent from 1950-1954 in the army infantry as a MP.  Once his service career ended Monica and Donald bought a ranch north of Bonesteel where they ranched the Whetstone until 2001.

After Donald's death, Monica continued to run the ranch.  Due to Dorothy's failing health, Monica gave up the ranch life to live closer to her mother.  Her new home was at the Burke Senior Housing.

Monica loved animals, especially the baby calves.  She spent a lot of time fishing with her best friend Ruth Sutton.  Her love of playing cards, dancing to polka music and her love of country music kept her busy.  Donald and Monica were very active in the Episcopal Church.

Monica was preceded in death by her husband, Donald; her mother, Dorothy (Mrs. Frank) Krienbuhl; her aunt Polly Cerney; uncles Steven and Earle and many nieces and nephews.  She is survived by her aunt Lillian of Rapid City, SD; her nephew, Alan; her brother-in-law Kenny (Dorothy) Qualm of Torrington, WY and several nieces, nephews and friends.
