Obituary

Marvin Lavern Gould was born on October 3,1933 in Cherokee, Iowa to Fred Gould and Mary (Anderson)Gould. He was the 11th child for Fred and the only child for Mary.  Marvin took Christs hand to his eternal home on April 23, 2024, at the age of 90 years.

Marvin was raised in the Larrabee/Cherokee Iowa area . He attended the Larabee School where he was active in basketball, baseball, choir/band. He was a tenor soloist and played the drums, graduating in 1953.  Marvin lived and worked in the area for many years helping area farmers during the different seasons in his spare time.  He worked at Lundell Manufacturing Plant as a machinist for 21 years until he moved to SD with his family in 1978. Marvin then worked for the Water and Street Department for 20 years for the City of Gregory, retiring in 1998. Marvin had a loving heart and it showed in the way he cared for his family and fellowman. His most rewarding job was as a husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. His family was everything to him and he was their beloved Papa. He went to as many activities for his children and grandchildren over the years.  Marvin had a high faith in God, and it got him through many things in life as well as singing.  He had a beautiful tenor voice and loved to harmonize with his wife Frances on many occasions. He was a cantor in church, in the church choir, and sang for many funerals and other occasions. Marvin belonged to the Gregory Community Players and sang in two musicals "South Pacific" and "Calamity Jane".  Marvin was active in his community first as a boy scout and then as a Webelo Scout Leader, he was active in Lions Club working many fundraisers, A proud member of the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed traveling with his family to many places. He loved the Minnesota Twins, Minnesota Vikings and his Iowa Hawkeyes!

Marvin married the love of his life Frances (Hotz) Salmen on April 26,1974 in Elk Point, SD.  In 1975 they were expecting but sadly lost the twins his wife was carrying. Marvin and Frances remained strong for 49 years, they fell short of their 50th wedding anniversary by a few short months.

Marvin was preceded in death by: his wife Frances, twin babies, parents, his siblings; Ruth (Russell)Parks, Hazel (Leo)Kelly, Harold (Pauline) Gould, Galen (Vivian) Gould, Cliford (Halyson) Gould, Kenny (Joyce) Gould, Bernice (Victor) Mercer, Shirley Gould, Lorene Lundell, Raymond (stillborn), his wife's parents and siblings.

Marvin is survived by: his children Scott (Rose) Salmen, Teresa (Stan) Waterbury, his grandchildren:  Alissa (Ryan), Amber (Kyle), Quincy (Amy), Phil (Kendra), Brian, Lucy (Tracy), Walter. His great grandchildren: William, Weston, Wrenn, Victoria, Bryce, Cash, Reagan, Brennan, Abriana, Emmalyn, Ellie, Libby, Tucker, Keaton, his sister-in- law: Rose Hotz, His brother-in-law: Roy Farabee and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral services for Marvin Gould, age 90, of Burke, SD will be held on Wednesday, May 1, 2024 at 10:30 AM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Burke.  Burial will be in the Herrick Cemetery, Herrick.  There will be a rosary on Tuesday at 7:00 PM at the church.  Visitation will be one hour prior to both services at the church.
