Marvin Drey, 86, of Burke, South Dakota passed away on Tuesday, February 25, 2014 at the Winner Regional Long Term Care Facility in Winner, South Dakota.
Marvin was born to Albert and Edna (Jones) Drey on June, 17, 1929 in Gregory County, South Dakota. Marvin grew up helping around the farm with his brothers and sisters. He attended a rural elementary school near Gregory.
After school, Marvin"s responsibilities on the farm increased, both working harder and longer hours helping to provide for his family. Marvin was great help, never complaining about his chores.
Marvin was inducted into the Army on January 10, 1951 where he served his country during the Korean War. He was injured on October 3, 1951 near Charwan, Korea, when shrapnel from a Chinese hand grenade struck his face and legs. He was sent to the Swedish Red Cross Hospital in Pusan, Korea, where he stayed until returning to duty a few weeks later. Years later Marvin received the Purple Heart Medal that he earned on the Battlefield.
After returning home from Korea, Marvin moved south of Burke, where he farmed and lived until health issues forced him to move into town. He will be missed by his family and friends.
Marvin was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers Virgil, Vernon and Lyle; his sister Vivian Leibel; his brothers-in-law Ernie Howell, Dave Leibel and John Acton; his sister-in-law Ladora Drey; and his nephews Dudley Drey and Lynn Drey. He is survived by his sisters Pauline Howell and Marcy Acton; his brother Gerald Drey; his sisters-in-law Leitha Drey and Edith Drey; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, March 4th, 2014 at 10:30am at the Clausen Funeral Home in Burke, SD. Burial will Wednesday at Black Hills National Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to funeral service.
