Marie Ann Schmitz Cozad was born June 30, 1921 at Butte, Nebraska to Henry and Justina (Warnesek) Ertz and she died February 13, 2006 at the Gregory Community Hospital in Gregory, South Dakota at the age of 84 years, 7 months and 13 days.
Marie grew up on a farm near Butte, Nebraska where she attended the Butte Catholic School for five years and lived with the Catholic sisters. She later attended country school. She was the youngest child and she worked with her brothers on the farm until her marriage to William G. Schmitz on August 13, 1938. They settled on a farm near Bonesteel, South Dakota. To this union seven children were born: Shirley, Patricia, LeRoy, Marlene, Caroline, Robert and Donna.
William Billy died on January 30, 1958, at the age of 43 years, following surgery. Marie and the children moved into Bonesteel where Marie worked as a waitress. She was united in marriage to Pete Cozad on September 15, 1971. Pete died August 11, 2001.
At the time of her death, Marie was a resident of the Haisch Haus in Bonesteel. She enjoyed cards, bingo and visiting with friends.
Marie is survived by her children: Shirley Pistulka and husband Ken of Liberty, MO; Patty Bailey and husband Eben of Bonesteel, SD; LeRoy of Simpsonville, SC; Carol Pistulka and husband Dan of Omaha, NE; Robert and wife Margie of Platte, SD; and Donna of Gregory, SD; 16 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren.
Marie was preceded in death by her husband, Billy; her daughter, Marlene; her husband Pete; her parents; 10 brothers; 4 sisters and a great-great-grandson, Kaden Paulson.
Maries family would like to extend a special thank you to Monica and the staff at the Haisch Haus for all of their special care over the last eight years.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 17, 2006 at 10:00 AM at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Bonesteel. Burial will be in the St. Marys Catholic Cemetery, Bonesteel. There will be a rosary on Thursday at 7:00 PM at the Church. Visitation will be one hour prior to both services at the Church.
