Marguerite Henrietta Rockholm was born January 23, 1910, at their farm home north of Naper, the ninth of thirteen children born to Fred and Anna Rogers Rockholm. She passed away March 27, 2011, at the Butte Health Care Center where she had lived for six years, at the age of 101 years, two months and four days.
Marguerite had curly red hair which earned her the nickname "Curly." A favorite story from her childhood was of riding home from school in the back of Chief Yellow Horse's wagon atop the tarp that covered the leftovers from the butcher shop. She would stand and braid his hair while Yellow Horse drove the ponies on the two mile stretch of road north of Naper. She was the valedictorian of the first twelve-year graduating class from Naper High School in 1928. She was proud of the declamation medals she won while in school.
She attended Wayne State Teachers College and Peru State Teachers College and taught rural schools in Boyd and Keya Paha Counties for ten years. She worked in Omaha several summers and purchased a Model A to drive to Chicago to the World's Fair in 1933. While teaching at the Knapp School in Keya Paha County, she became acquainted with a young man in the community, Reo Ludemann. They were married June 1, 1938, and lived on rented farms in Boyd and Keya Paha Counties. They purchased the Rockholm farm north of Naper from Marguerite's parents in 1947. In 2008, she accepted the Knights of Ak-Sar-Ben Nebraska Pioneer Farm Award, recognizing a farm owned by the same family for 100 years or more.
Marguerite was noted for her ability at card playing and word puzzles, her quick wit, her speed at plucking chickens and pitting cherries, her love of Husker football, and her life-long hatred of snakes. She was an enthusiastic and tireless supporter of her husband and family and took pride in their achievements. If there was an activity in Naper, either community, church or school, Marguerite and Reo would be in attendance, even after their children had moved away. She was a member of First United Church of Christ in Naper.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Reo, who died December 31, 1999; her son Terry Wayne in 1939; her brothers Chris, Pete, Soren, Fred, Darro, Roger and Norman; her sisters Eva Reetz, Emma Alice Rockholm, Emma Allgood, and Marie Bunch. She is survived by her children Ann and husband Larry Anderson of Naper, Roger and wife Barbara Ludemann of Lincoln, Mary Ludemann and husband Scott Davis of Sheridan, WY, and Margaret Ludemann and husband Denny Jorgensen of Glenview, IL. Also surviving are eleven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, her sister Wilma of Hesperia, CA, and her sister-in-law, Charlotte Rockholm of Reno, NV; many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 1, 2011 at 11:00 AM at the United Church of Christ in Naper. Burial will be at the Knollcrest Cemetery, Naper. Visitation will be Thursday from 7:00 PM until 9:00 PM at the church.
