Larry Dean Schmitz was born in Burke, South Dakota on June 30, 1947 to Joseph & Helen (Raterman) Schmitz.  He died Wednesday, September 28, 2011 at his home in Bonesteel, South Dakota, with family at his side, at the age of 64 years, 2 months & 28 days

Larry was united in marriage to Linda Smolik of Fairfax, South Dakota on September 5, 1970. To this union 2 children were born.

Larry worked as Highway Maintenance for South Dakota Department of Transportation in Bonesteel for 26 years.  He was a US Army Veteran, and served in Vietnam in 1968.  He was also a member of American Legion Post 36.

Larry is survived by his wife, Linda Schmitz of Bonesteel, SD; son, Jason Smith of Stevensville, WA; son, Chris Schmitz of Lincoln, NE; son & daughter-in-law, Shawn & Nicole Schmitz of Lincoln, NE; grandson, Kale Schmitz of Lincoln, NE; sister, Leona (Don) Swallow of Pierce, NE; brother, Ray (Lisa) Schmitz of Gettysburg, SD; brother, Marvin (Eileen) Schmitz of Bonesteel, SD; sister, Linda (Mike) Schochenmaier of Bonesteel, SD; aunts: Marie Weidner of Tyndall, SD, Donna Raterman of Fairfax, SD, Deloris Raterman of Norfolk, NE; sisters-in-law: Donna Baker, Marlene Ray (JR), Arlene Tipton (Tip), and Margie Halloran (Phil) an several cousins,  nieces, and nephews

Larry was preceded in death by his parents Joseph & Helen Schmitz; his sister Sharon Schmitz and by his sister-in-law Betty Schmitz.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 1, 2011 at 10:30 AM at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Bonesteel. Burial will be in the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Bonesteel. There will be a rosary on Friday at 7:00 PM at the church. Visitation will be one hour prior to both services at the church.
