Obituary

Larry Edward Ott was born May 23, 1938 in the home of his German immigrant grandparents at Fairfax, South Dakota. He was the son of Frederick (Fred) George Ott and Esther Marie (Fuhrer) Ott. He spent his early life on the family farm south of Bonesteel, South Dakota. He received his education through the tenth grade at Bonesteel and graduated from Fairfax High School in 1957.
Larry served on active duty in the US Army from 1961 to 1962 and in the Army Reserves until his discharge in 1967.
In 1962, Larry married Mary K. Laprath of Dallas, South Dakota. The couple farmed the family farm until her death in 1966. In 1967, he moved his young family to South Sioux City, Nebraska where he was employed by the local Farmers Co-op for thirteen years, serving in a variety of positions including assistant manager. In 1970, he married Sharon Newkirk of Sioux City, Iowa.
Larry married Jean Steele on March 13, 1982. In 1983 he moved his family to Atchison, Kansas where he work in food service, as a security guard and as a truck driver. In 1993, Larry and Jean moved to Ogallala, Nebraska where he was the owner and operator of Otts Floor Service.
Larry was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Ogallala. He was also a member of the American Legion and the Eagles Club. His hobbies included gardening, playing cards and fishing.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Doris Ott.
Larry is survived by his wife Jean Ott of Ogallala, NE; daughter Esther Ott Garcia (Carlos) of Brownsville, TX; his sons: Robert Ott (Carrie) of Clarksville, TN; and LTC Paul Ott (Mary) of Pinehurst, NC; two step-daughters: Sandra Manuel (Ernie) of Albert Lea, MN and Lori Ann Steele of Atchison, KS; three step-sons: Steve Steele of Miami, FL; Jeffrey Steele (Peggy) of Gibbon, NE; and Robert Charlie Steele (Juanita) of South Sioux City, NE. He is also survived by his two sisters: Claryce Ott of Sun City, AZ and Marilyn Faatz of Rapid City, SD; one brother, Allen Ott of Cheyenne, WY; eight grandchildren, fifteen step-grandchildren and twelve step-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, September 29, 2009 at 1:00 PM at Calvary Bible Church in Bonesteel. Burial will be in the Rosebud Cemetery, Bonesteel. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services at the church.
