Obituary

Kenneth John (Butch) Leibel was the youngest child born to John and Selma (Schroer) Leibel on June 23, 1943. He died June 16, 2013 at the Community Memorial Hospital in Burke, South Dakota at the age of 69 years.

Butch was raised on the family farm northwest of Burke. He attended Streeter School throughout his elementary years and graduating from Burke High School in 1961. When he was 13 his father died, so Butch took on most of the farming responsibilities. Later he was employed with Lloyd Bartling Construction of Burke. After several years, he started his own carpentry business and then partnered with Doug Bauld in Leibel and Bauld Construction. In 1992 he joined the staff of Missouri Valley Insurance as a claims adjuster, where he was employed until his death.

On October 1, 1977, he was joined in marriage with Deb Glover. He was also blessed that day by becoming the father to Michael David Glover. On April 15, 2000, he was blessed with a daughter-in-law, Tamra, and a granddaughter, Kaitlyn. Mike and Tamra also blessed Butch with two grandsons, Brogan and Braxton. All three of his grandchildren were his greatest joy.

Butch served on the Burke Volunteer Fire Department for 40 years and was the 1st Assistant Chief at the time of his death. He gave countless hours to the department: attending fire schools, training others, fund-raising, and racing to fires. This was Butch's greatest passion, and he took great pride in his fire department. He helped with the Burke Ambulance Department also by being an EVOC driver. Butch also served on numerous church boards for the Burke Methodist Church and was very devoted to his faith.

Butch loved his motorcycle. He and Deb took many trips and made many long-lasting friendships. The two of them never missed the Sturgis Rallies. Due to his life-long love of carpentry, he was often working on a project or advising others on their projects. When he was younger, Butch was an avid hunter and fisherman. Recently he enjoyed helping at Tom's Wild Game. One of the highlights of his summers was the family vacations to the Black Hills.

Butch is survived by his wife Deb of 36 years; his son, Mike and wife Tamra; his grandchildren: Kaitlyn and special friend Andrew Steffen, Brogan and Braxton; his sister, Jean (Tom) Bailey of Bonesteel, SD; his sister-in-law: Ginny Leibel of Gregory, SD; his mother-in-law, Lois Glover of Burke, SD; his father-in-law, Harvey Glover of Burke, SD; brothers-in-law: Tom (Peg) Glover of Burke, SD; David (Judy) Glover of Kearny, NE; and Gary (Dawn) Glover of Elk Point, SD; sister-in-law, Marsha (John) Broadbooks of Sioux Falls, SD and numerous nieces and nephews. Butch was preceded in death by his parents, John and Selma; his brothers: Robert and Wayne and his sister, Pauline and her husband Charles Elliott.

Butch will be greatly missed by his many family and friends.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, June 22, 2013 at 10:30 AM at the Civic Center in Burke. Burial will be in the Graceland Cemetery, Burke. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the Civic Center.
