Obituary

Kay Ann (Labahn) Grim was born on September 22, 1942, at Burke Hospital in Burke, South Dakota, to Vernon Romain Labahn and Iola Mae Labahn. She passed away on March 24, 2026, at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, North Dakota, at the age of 83.

Kay grew up in the Gregory and Burke, South Dakota area. In 1948, she began attending the School for the Deaf in Sioux Falls, where she remained until 1967. During her years there, she participated in baton twirling, cheerleading, and learned to tap dance. Kay especially loved dancing by feeling the vibrations of the music.

She enjoyed baking and was fondly remembered for making a bunny cake every Easter. Kay also loved playing cards with her family and grandchildren, as well as sewing and doing crafts. Her home was always cheerfully decorated for every holiday and season.

Kay worked alongside her mother at the Burke Hotel and Café, where she waited on customers and helped prepare desserts and salads. In 1991, she moved to Grand Forks, North Dakota, and was employed at Altru Hospital in Laundry Services for five years. While there, she made many deaf friends and enjoyed attending events at the local Deaf Club.

Kay is survived by her five children: Ricky (Debbie) Labahn of Spearfish, SD, Diane (David) Fugleberg of Grand Forks, ND, Claude (Destine) Raschke of Woonsocket, SD, Darwin (Kerri) Grim of Gregory, SD, and Tina (Corey) Kaltenberg of Grand Forks, ND; her siblings: Barbara Sanders, Connie Moore, Patricia (Jim) Kuchta, Roger (Melody) Labahn, Cynthia (Troy) Binde, and Janet (Tom) Gilbertson; 15 grandchildren; and 19 great‑grandchildren, with one more great‑grandchild on the way.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Vernon and Iola Labahn; her brothers, Eugene (Gene) Labahn and Darwin (Lyn) Labahn; her sister, Judy Hoffman; and her brothers‑in‑law, Robert Sanders, Verlon Hoffman, and Jim Moore and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
