Joyce Deffenbaugh, 86 of Burke, SD passed away on Thursday, December 29, at the Burke Community Memorial Hospital in Burke, SD.  Funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 5, 2023 at 1:00PM at the Clausen Funeral Home in Burke, SD.  Burial will follow in the Graceland Cemetery in Burke, SD.  A visitation will be held one hour prior to funeral service.

Joyce Marie Deffenbaugh was born on April 13, 1936 to William and Katie (Mayden) Trimble in Tulare County, California.  Joyce died December 29, 2022 at the Community Memorial Hospital in Burke, South Dakota.

When Joyce was two years old, she accidentally drank lye.  She spent the next three years in and out of hospitals.  She had numerous throat and stomach surgeries during this time.

Joyce attended schools in California, Texas, and Missouri.  She received her GED while living in Gordon, Nebraska.

She married Bernard Ness and they had two sons, Mark and Ronnie.  The couple later divorced.  She married Douglas Deffenbaugh on December 24, 1986 in Rapid City, South Dakota.  Joyce worked for Black Hills Jewelry for 14 years while living in Rapid City.  She and Doug moved back to Burke in 2001.  A couple of Joyce's favorite pastimes were riding the van to Flandreau and doing word searches.

Joyce is survived by her son Ronnie, step-children Brenda (Tim) Warnke, Brad (Lisa) Deffenbaugh, and Mike (Jean) Deffenbaugh, daughter-in-law Ruth Deffenbaugh and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Douglas, son Mark Ness, step-son Mark Deffenbaugh, her parents, sister Joann, and brothers Rod, Roy, Earl, Charles and Ray.
