John Emil
Holub
December 3, 1929 – September 28, 2020
John Emil Holub was born on a cold day on December 3, 1929 at Burke, South Dakota to Emil and Bettsie (Matucha) Holub. He died September 28, 2020 at Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota at the age of 90 years.
John attended grade school at the Rhodes Township school through the eighth grade. He then began working with his dad and brothers Art and Frank, as well as his sisters Velma and Mary Jane. In December of 1950 he was drafted into the United States Army where he served with the 2nd Infantry division out of Ft. Riley, Kansas. He served the Battle of Heart Break Ridge were he was wounded in the shoulder and back, and received the Purple Heart. He was discharged in 1952 and returned home.
John was united in marriage to Neomi Stevicks at Burke, South Dakota and to this union one son, Roland, was born. They moved to Winner were he worked for Tripp County as a maintenance man in the shop until 1961. they then moved to his parents house north of Burke where they farmed. He began working with 2 cylinder John Deere tractors putting up hay and raising Herford cattle. The 1980's were tough times and John began working for area farmers including Jim Lubbers and Derald Young. He then worked construction for Carlson Construction and Kaine Construction out of Winner. He was proud of the work he accomplished with his Belgian Horses hauling hay, which he would feed to his cattle with a pitch fork.
They enjoyed traveling throughout the Midwest: the Black Hill, Big Horn's, Yellowstone, and Pike's Peak to name a few.
John was a member of the VFW Post #9950 as well as the American Legion Post 28. He is survived by his son, Roland of Burke, South Dakota.
