Obituary

John Joseph Campbell, the second of ten children, was born November 13, 1942 at Stuart, Nebraska to Glenn and Frances (Ketterl) Campbell. He died March 11, 2008 at Sanford Medical Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, following a bout with cancer and a recent surgery, at the age of 65 years, 3 months and 28 days.

John attended rural school south of Newport, Nebraska until 1952 when his parents moved to Stuart. He then attended St. Boniface grade school and later Stuart High School. He worked on ranches in western Nebraska until September 3, 1963 when he entered the United States Army. He trained at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri and then at Ft Bliss, Texas. He served two tours in Vietnam with the HHC, 3rd Ord Bn, and was honorably discharged on July 27, 1967.

John married Dorothy Slaymaker of Atkinson, Nebraska on December 1, 1968 at Atkinson. They ranched in Rock and Keya Paha counties in Nebraska for well over twenty years. John was later employed at the Burke Livestock Auction for the past ten years. He was diagnosed with colon cancer two years ago, which forced his retirement. He was a member of the Herrick American Legion.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Glenn and Frances and one sister, Sharon Brownlow.

John is survived by his ex-wife, Dorothy Campbell of Atkinson, NE; five sisters: Glenda Rae Bradley of Council Bluffs, IA; Charlene (Ed) Ziska of Grand Island, NE; Denise Haye of Oak Grove, MO; Angela Kopejtka of Norfolk, NE; and Cindy Campbell of Stuart, NE; three brothers: Gary (Dorine) Campbell of Inman, NE; Robert (Donna) Campbell of Stuart, NE; and Ivan (Janice) Campbell of Stuart, NE; his brother-in-law: George Brownlow of Hay Springs, NE; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 15, 2008 at 3:00 PM at Seger Funeral Home in Stuart, NE. Burial will be in the Stuart Community Cemetery, Stuart. There will be a rosary on Friday at 7:00 PM at the funeral home. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to both services at the funeral home.
