Obituary

James Lee Liewer was born in Lynch, Nebraska on July 16, 1948, to Alfons & Leona (Wesley) Liewer. He entered heaven on May 26, 2026, at the age of 77 years at home.

Jim was raised on the family farm west of Butte. He attended Ss. Peter & Paul Catholic School through the eighth grade then attended Butte High School and graduated with the class of 1966.

After proudly serving his country for two years in the Army based at Fort Lewis, WA and Fort Sill, OK, Jim attended college at University of Nebraska School of Technical Agriculture. On June 10, 1972, Jim married Sandra (Kolbo) Liewer. They returned to the life he loved making their home in rural Boyd County where they raised their six children Jeanne, Tom, Joe, Pamela, Debra and Douglas.

He was a steward of the land and lived a life grounded in hard work, strong faith, and devotion to his family. Farming and ranching was not just his livelihood, but his way of life. He took great pride in working the land, caring for his animals and crops, and providing for those he loved through honest labor and perseverance.

Faith was the foundation of his life. Jim trusted deeply in God and lived his beliefs through kindness, humility, generosity, and service to others. Whether through his church, his community, or quiet acts of compassion, he touched many lives with his steady presence and unwavering values.

He was known for his strength, wisdom, and willingness to lend a helping hand to family and friends. He enjoyed time spent with family, sharing stories, and the simple blessings of rural life. He looked forward to family gatherings whether it was a celebration, working cattle, hunting, fishing or enjoying the beauty of Boyd County and the Niobrara River where he spent his whole life.

Jim is survived by wife Sandra of nearly 54 years; children Jeanne (Cory) Davis of Bonesteel, SD, Tom Liewer and Joe Liewer of Butte, NE, Pamela (Todd) Dummer of Bonesteel, SD, Debra (Colin) Zuhlke of Creighton, NE and Douglas Liewer of Columbus, NE; 3 grandsons Cullen Davis, RJ Dummer & Leonard Zuhlke; siblings Marvin Liewer, Ronnie Liewer & Deanna (Tim) Wismer. His father-in-law Raymond Kolbo, sister-in-law Jackie (Dan) Keyser, brother-in-law Jim (Jean) Kolbo and many nieces and nephews

He was preceded in death by his parents Alfons and Leona Liewer, brother Joseph in infancy, sister-in-law Kathryn Liewer, and mother-in-law Shirley Kolbo.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 30th, 2026, at 10:00 AM at Ss. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Butte, NE. Burial will be in Ss. Peter & Paul Catholic Cemetery, Butte. There will be a rosary on Friday at 7:00 PM at the Church. Visitation will be one hour prior to both services at the Church.

Though he will be deeply missed, his legacy of faith, hard work, family devotion, and family farming will continue to live on in all who knew him.
