James Harvey "Hymer" Benter, 75, of Burke, SD passed away on Sunday, February 21 ^st , 2021 at the Avera Rosebud Country Care Center in Gregory, SD.  A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 6 ^th , 2021 at 1:00PM at the Baptist Church in Burke, SD.  A visitation will be held one hour prior to service.

On Sunday, February 21 ^st , 2021 James Harvey Benter, loving husband and father passed away at the age of 75.  James was born on September 19 ^th 1945 in Burke, SD to Harvey and Esther (Carlson) Benter. His father passed when he was 6 years old and his mother passed when he was 12 years old.  He then went to live with his sister Dorothy until high school graduation.  He attended Burke High school and had a passion for playing sports. His summers were spent as a life guard at the Burke Lake.  After graduation he moved to Sioux Falls and worked various jobs.  He then moved back to Burke and got a job driving truck for a while at the cheese plant in Burke.  During this time he and a friend bought the Long Branch and managed it for several years.  He enjoyed being outdoors and spent many hours hunting, fishing, and playing softball.  In 1979 he was married to Joyce Bartling.  After the birth of their daughter he started doing road construction until he retired.  Family was very important to him and he was very proud of his daughter, two grandsons, and all his relatives.  The Carlson reunion was one of his favorite topics to talk about as well as the Green Bay Packers.  He loved talking to people even if he didn't know them.  If he could find a deck of cards around you could bet he would be getting a game of pinochle or pitch going.  He was well known for his willingness to help and kind heart.

James is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers Howard and Don Benter; sisters Dorothy Johnson, Nellie Romo, and Linda Heying.

James will be forever remembered by his wife of 42 years, Joyce; daughter Meridith, her husband Jesse and their sons Henry and Dylan; loving in-laws, nieces and nephews.
