Irene Doris Weickum was born January 7, 1917 on the family home in Nebraska to Rine"Holt" and Mary (Rabe) Martin. She died March 9, 2013 at the TLC Assisted Living Center in Burke, South Dakota at the age of 96 years.
Irene attended Naper Schools for ten years. She was united in marriage to Rudy Weickum on July 5, 1933 and to this union one daughter, Donna, was born. Together they bought a farm along the Keya Paha River in 1951, which was their lifelong dream. She loved catching catfish out of the river, which is where she spent her spare time. She also enjoyed gardening and canning all of the vegetables and fruits and attending to her flowers. She was a fabulous cook. But her greatest joy was her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed card games with the neighbors, traveling to the casino and Friday night bingo in Burke. Irene and Rudy retired in 1979 and moved to Naper.
Irene was preceded in death by her husband, Rudy; her daughter, Donna Dyer; two sisters and four brothers-in-law: Mildred and Harry Fuhrer and Twila and Eugene McLaughlin, Fred Weickum and Art and Julia Martin; one niece, Jane Fuhrer; and by her parents, Holt and Mary Martin.
Irene is survived by her son-in-law, Jon Dyer, who never missed a day to go see her; her four grandchildren: Pamela, Bradley, Terry and Rick; her three step-grandchildren: Lisa, Mark and Mike; eight great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren, a sister-in-law, Elaine Weickum and nephews, Denny Weickum and Kelly Fuhrer. She will be missed by all.
