Ida Mae Frasch was born April 4, 1925 at Fairfax, South Dakota to Fred and Lydia (Weidrick) Bentz and she died June 9, 2010 at the Rosebud Country Care Center in Gregory, South Dakota at the age of 85 years.
Ida grew up on the family farm near Fairfax with her eight sisters and four brothers. She was one of the oldest and helped take care of younger siblings. During her high school years, she worked for the local bakery in town, this job helped to develop her love for baking. She graduated from Fairfax High School with the class of 1943.
On July 9, 1944, she was united in marriage to Edwin Frasch at Fairfax and to this union four children were born: Mary Jean, Linda Kay, Jerome and Susan Marie. They made their home on a farm east of Fairfax until the spring of 1966 when they moved to a farm eight miles south of Burke, South Dakota. She was a natural farm wife and spent her days caring for her family by cooking, baking, gardening, canning countless jars of fruits and vegetables, tending her chickens and then shooing her chickens out of her prized flower patch, often disgusted with them for scratching out the seeds of her newly sprouted flowers. She loved to entertain and was known for her fried chicken, potato salad and freshly baked bread, buns and cinnamon rolls.
Ida was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Fairfax and later Immanuel Lutheran Church of Jamison. She was a member of the ladies Aide and taught Sunday School and Bible School for many years. She could always be counted on whenever there was a need for a potluck dish, cookies, bars, cake or pie for any church function.
In 1987, Ed and Ida moved into a home in Burke. Ida was thrilled to have indoor plumbing and running water for the first time in her life. They enjoyed their retirement years until Idas health took a turn for the worse, first with a heart attack and then a stroke in August of 1998. In 2001, they both moved into TLC Assisted Living in Burke. Ida resided there until February of 2010, when she transferred to the Rosebud Country Care Center in Gregory.
Ida was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was always concerned about her grandchildren and enjoyed hearing of their activities and accomplishments. She had a wonderful sense of humor and was a bit mischievous when playing cards, especially her favorite game of pitch. Whenever anyone visited them in their home, she welcomed them with a cup of coffee and one of her baked treats.
Ida is survived by her four children: Mary Jean and husband Denny Goodrich of Mankato, MN; Linda and husband Raymond Roggow of Elk Point, SD; Jerome and wife Veronica of Gregory, SD; and Sue and husband Paul Teel of Herrick, SD; nine grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, three step-great-grandchildren; one brother, Don Bentz and wife Betty, seven sisters: Leona Opbroek, Rose Sterns, Marge Kramer, Darlene Desmaris, Alice Anderson, Twila Schmidt and Pat Larson and husband Marvin; one sister-in-law, Louise Bentz; one brother-in-law, Rudy Frasch and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
