Obituary

Hollis Curley Haisch was born January 24, 1912 at Winner, South Dakota to Oscar and Gertrude (Wheeler) Haisch and he died January 15, 2009 at the Community Memorial Hospital in Burke, South Dakota at the age of 96 years.
Curley graduated from Fairfax High School in 1930. He then began working at the Mulehead Ranch north of Bonesteel, South Dakota, where he raised sheep. When he was 18 years old he was run over by a disc and team of horses and lost several toes on his right foot. He was told that he would never walk again. Not only did he learn to walk, but he learned to dance and loved it.
Curley purchased the ranch from his father in the 1950s. The building site was moved in 1952 when the river was raised. In 1956 he was crushed between two gravel trucks on the ranch. He was flown to Sioux Falls where Dr. Nelson saved my life according to Curley.
In 1932 Curley met Rose Riley while she was teaching at the Mule Head Ranch School. They were united in marriage on June 26, 1958 at Mitchell, South Dakota. Together they operated the ranch for many years. They raised cattle as well as irrigated crops. They were known for great goose hunting and deer hunting excursions that they provided on the ranch.
Curley served on the Conservation Board for 35 years, the Township Board for 50 years and was a member of the Cattlemens Association.
Rose and Curley were inducted into the South Dakota Hall of Fame in the Unsung Heroes and Good Hearts Category in 1998. They were well known in the area for their unselfish generosity.
Curley was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Rose; three brothers and four sisters. He is survived by his sister, Martha Mashek of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; his sister-in-law, Leigh Anne Haisch of Mitchell, South Dakota as well as several nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Rose and Curley never had any children of their own, but their hired men and their families became a close part of their lives.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 19, 2009 at 10:30 AM at Clausen Funeral Home in Burke. Burial will be in the Rosebud Cemetery, Bonesteel. Visitation will be Sunday from 2 to 5 PM, with a 5:00 PM prayer service, at the funeral home.
