Helmer Anton Jensen was born November 20, 1945 at Lynch, Nebraska, the only son of Anton and Rose (Cotton) Jensen. He passed away September 12, 2009 at his home surrounded by his loved ones after a short battle with cancer.
Helmer was raised on the family ranch east of Fairfax and graduated from Fairfax High School in 1962. He was drafted and chose to join the Army in 1966 and proudly served his country for two years. He spent eight months fighting in the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged in 1968.
Helmer was united in marriage to Sharon Vaughn on May 31, 1969 and to this union two children were born: Sonya Kaye and Anton Helmer. He returned to the family ranch in 1971 with his wife where they raised their family.
Helmer had a special gift of music which he inherited from his father. He and Sharon, along with his sister Nila, entertained many people over the years with their country band The Scalp Creek Raiders.
Helmer loved to be on his ranch enjoying nature. He loved trapping and horses, two interests that he shared with his grandchildren, Ethan and Lexie, who were the light of his life. He truly enjoyed watching his grandchildren ride horses and compete in rodeo.
Helmer was a member of the American Legion in Bonesteel and a Lifetime member of the VFW in Burke. He was also a member of the United Church of Christ.
Helmer leaves to mourn his death his wife of forty years, Sharon; his daughter Sonya (Duane) Fernau; his son Anton (Sherry Bachmann) and his grandchildren:Ethan and Lexie Fernau and Austin Bachmann; his sister Nila (Ron) Koenig and his sisters-in-law: Ada Mae Moody, Inez Tech, Rose (LaMone) Kerner; brothers-in-law: Ray (DeAnne) Vaughn, Paul (Betty) Vaughn and Clayton Steele and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
Helmer was preceded in death by his parents; his father-in-law Lyle Vaughn and his mother-in-law Cecil Vaughn; brothers-in-law: Don Moody, Darrell Tech, Lyle Vaughn Jr. and wife Loretta, and sister-in-law Karon Steele.
Helmer was an amazing husband, father, grandfather and friend. He will be missed greatly by those who loved him.
Memorial services will be held on Wednesday, September 16, 2009 at 10:30 AM at the City Hall in Fairfax. Burial will be in the Knollcrest Cemetery, Naper, Nebraska. There will be a prayer service on Tuesday at 8:00 PM at the hall. Visitation will be one hour prior to both services at the hall.
