Helen Edith Brevik Young was born February 19, 1924 to Bert and Elsie Mae (Hyatt) Brevik in a four room farmhouse near Burke, South Dakota arriving the fourth of eight children. She was proud of her Norwegian heritage and held her parents in high regard. Helen passed away September 3, 2012 in the Special Care Unit, in Winner, South Dakota with family close by.
Helen began her elementary education at the Hornbeck School, then attended Lucas High School through her junior year and graduated from Burke High School. She worked for a time at Kallander"s Grocery Store. On November 26, 1943 she married Darrel Winfield Young at Burke. They engaged in farming and ranching operations near Tyndall and later near Burke. To this union four sons were born: Weary, Doyle, Dwight and Boyt. Helen enjoyed the livestock, especially the horses, and enjoyed gardening, which, of course, led to canning. She was a social person, participating in the Mary & Martha Women"s Club, and neighborhood wahoo parties, a marble and dice game she also shared with her family - though she always intended to win. She was also a member of the Lucas Baptist Church.
Helen and Darrel went on several trips, some through their Vigortone Feed association. She maintained many friendships through these adventures, exchanging letters and Christmas cards for many years.
Helen and Darrel hosted many family gatherings, some for special holidays and some simply for summer visitors, so we could get to know the extended family members. She was known for her fried chicken and gravy, bars, cakes and her sugar cocoa fudge served to trick or treaters and drivers alike. She greatly loved and supported her family, making each grandchild know how special they were to her. She greatly grieved the loss of her first grandchild.
Helen and Darrel celebrated 60 years of marriage in 2003 and she bid him farewell in 2004. In the following years, she experienced several health issues, living for awhile in Silver Threads in Gregory and then in the Winner Regional Long term Care Center. We have been saying good-bye now for sometime, since Alzheimer"s became part of her life.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Darrel; her parents; her grandson, Brent Leroy; two brothers: Raymond and George; three sisters: Bernice Brown, Kathreen (Kay) Wynia and Marjorie Pense-McCormick.
Those left behind to rejoice in her life are her children: Weary (Sandy) of Burke, SD; Doyle (Barbara) of Brandon, SD; Dwight of Burke, SD; Boyt (Theresa) of Hamill, SD; 12 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren; a sister, Deloris Evenson of Lake Park, MN; a brother, Art Brevik of Loves Park, IL; a special "daughter", Stella Christensen (Jack) of Council Bluffs, IA and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 8, 2012 at 10:30 AM at the Union Baptist Church in Burke, SD. Burial will be in the Graceland Cemetery, Burke. Visitation will be Friday from 5 PM to 7 PM, with a 6:30 PM prayer service at the Church.
