Obituary

Hazel Elizabeth Talsma was born February 22, 1920 at Burke, South Dakota to Robert and Minnie (Grantz) Risewick and she died April 18, 2011 at the Rosebud Country Care Center in Gregory, South Dakota at the age of 91 years.

Hazel attended Happy Hollow country school where she met her future husband, Glen. She graduated from Burke High School in 1938 as the class salutatorian.

Hazel and Glen were married May 14, 1942 at Sioux City, Iowa, a union that lasted sixty-six years. Glen was drafted a few days later and they were stationed in California. The lived there until Glen was sent to Europe. Hazel then returned to Burke and Glen joined her after the war in 1946.

They eventually bought the Risewick homestead and farmed until their retirement to Burke in 1990. Hazel was well known for her sewing, quilting, crocheting, knitting and embroidering. She gave many of her quilts and afghans as gifts. Her greatest joy was making and giving away baby quilts.

She was an active member of the Hospital Ladies Auxiliary, a member of the VFW Auxiliary and the Rosebud Quilters Guild.

Hazel was preceded in death by her husband, Glen, and her sisters, Lavinia Wilson and Peggy Kappelman.

Hazel is survived by her sons: Norman of Wyoming; David and wife Kathy of Spearfish, South Dakota; and Don and wife Annette of Fredericks, Virginia; seven grandchildren; her sister, Myrtle and husband John "Bud" Osnes of Burke, South Dakota; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 21, 2011 at 10:00 AM at Grace Lutheran Church in Burke. Burial will be in the Graceland Cemetery of Burke. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM, with a 7:00 PM prayer service, at Clausen Funeral Home in Burke.
