Obituary

Harold Henry Ulmer of Winner, SD passed away on April 10, 2016 at the Burke Memorial Hospital with family by his side at the age of 79.

Harold was born on August 29, 1936 on a farm South of Burke to Albert and Hilda (Knittel) Ulmer.  He was the 4th oldest of eight children. They later moved to a farm south of Gregory where he grew up and attended a country school south of Carlock.  He worked for several area farmers in Gregory County and he met the love of his life, Nola Dummer, in the fall of 1954 at a dance. He then enlisted in the United States Army in January of 1955.  He went to basic training in Fort Carson, CO  and Engineering School at Fort Belvoir, VA and was stationed in France with the 581st Engineer Company as a diesel mechanic.  He was honorably discharged on December 14, 1956.

After his tour in the Army he started working for several area ranchers. He and Nola were united in marriage on March 17, 1957 and to this union four children were born, Doug, Wanda, Lori and Monte.    They worked on a ranch south of Winner and later moved to a farm south of Herrick.  They made their living milking cows, raising pigs, growing corn, alphalfa  and oats.  They lived there until retiring  from farming in 1986 and moved to Winner, SD to work at the Bachmann Brothers Bee Farm.

He then started his own mechanic business and later purchased the "Shop" in Gregory SD where he worked on tractors and other farm equipment for many local area farmers.  Whether it was in his Shop or out in the middle of a field he was always able to get them running again.   His great passion was restoring old John Deere tractors.  His favorite being an old 35B John Deere, which he drove in the 4th of July Parade in Gregory several times and brought home the  1st Place Trophy.  He also enjoyed fishing and drinking coffee with his friends and family - especially his brother Ray.  Towards the end - when Harold could not get around very well - Ray would even have to shovel the snow drift to get into the house to have that cup of coffee.

Harold is survived by his wife Nola; his children: Doug (Gail) Ulmer of Herrick, SD;  Lori ( Dennis) Labahn of Grand Forks, ND; and Monte (Dana) Ulmer of Springfield, VA; a son-in-law Rocky Gutierrez of Commerce City, CO; 13 grandchildren,  12 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandson.  He is also survived by his brothers: Ray (Clara), Winner SD; Ralph (Erma) Henderson, NV;  Larry (Leola), Gregory, SD; his sisters: Lue (Don) Vaughn, Winner, SD; Darlene (Wally) Bachmann, Colome, SD;  Norma (Joe) Perrymon, Warrior, AL; his sister-in law Diane Ulmer, Portsmouth, VA and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

He is preceded in death by his daughter, Wanda Gutierrez, his parents Albert and Hilda Ulmer, brother, Wayne Ulmer, father-in-law Herman Dummer and mother-in-law Lena Dummer.
