Obituary

Reverend Hampton Ray Andrews, Wanagila Zintkala Hoksila (Little Spirit Bird Boy) was born to Jesse, Sr. and Mercy (Stone Arrow) Andrews on May 6, 1934 at Bonesteel, South Dakota. He entered into eternal rest at his home on January 30, 2016.
He attended country school at Pleasant View School, west and south of Bonesteel. He had various jobs working for area farmers. He was the Head Start bus driver when it was at the old Coffee House and at the old day school. He lived and worked in Ainsworth, Nebraska and in the Spud Fields in Clark, South Dakota. He helped get the Milk's Camp Industries going and the United Church Cattle Association through the Heifer Project International out of Little Rock, Arkansas. He also helped establish the Council for American Indian Ministries. He was asked by Reverend Grandon Harris to take care of the church. Dad said yes, thinking he meant cleaning it...Grandon meant he was to hold services. From that time on, he has served the Ponca Creek UCC for over 35 years. He also served on the JOM Board at the Bonesteel School for many years. In the 1960's he went to Mechanic and Welding School in Fargo, North Dakota.
Hampton was a moderator for the Dakota Association and Mission Meeting for many years. He was also the cop for the community. He served on the Tribal Council for many years. As well as the SWA Housing Board.
Hampton was preceded in death by his grandparents, James Andrews and Millie Jaw; Francis Stone Arrow and Sara Jones; his parents, Jesse Sr. and Mercy (Stone Arrow); his children: Ronald James, Judith Faye and Kevin Ray; his grandchildren: Wilson Andrews, Amber Old Lodge and Derek Yellow Hawk; his great-grandchild, Faye Yellow Hawk; his sisters: Josephine LaPointe, Margaret Williams and Donna Beare; his brothers: Conrad, Marvin, Ronald, Dana, Stanford and Wilfred; his father and mother-in-law, Chris and Dora (Poor Man) Yellow Hawk.
Hampton is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mercedes; his daughters: Barb (Thomas) Timber and Judy (Neil) Hanson; son Byron (Brenda) Andrews; and Arlene Andrews; his sisters: Caroline, Joyce, Rita and Winifred; his brother, Jesse, Jr; eleven grandchildren: Erica, April, Curtis, Ashley, Brandon, Barron, Brandi, Byron, Jr., Courtney and Kristy; twenty-four great grandchildren: Chasity, Lindsey, Kaylee, Dillon, Faith, JT, Araya, Gian, Dereka, Aaron, Elijah, James, Brayden, Tehya, Bryson, Trinity, Jaxon, Sienna, Laveya, Rexton, Zander, Zanden, Anunka and Kevin; and three great-great-grandchildren: Ty, Wyatt and Adrian.
