Gregg LeRoy Wilhelmsen, age 65, of Spencer, Nebraska, beloved Dad, Son, Brother, companion, and friend passed away peacefully March 22, 2021 at the Sanford USD Medical Center, Sioux Falls. Gregg was born February 26, 1956 to Peter and Ada Jeanne (Hutchinson) Wilhelmsen in the Burke Hospital. He was the second of five children. He lived in Jamison, Nebraska. While in Jamison, he became lifelong friends with Charlie Wolf where he attended the Spotted Tail School. In 1963, he moved with his family to Burke, South Dakota where he attended the Burke High School. He was involved in many activities in high school, including basketball, baseball, and football where he gained many lifelong friends. He was confirmed in the Grace Lutheran Church in Burke, South Dakota. At the age of 13, he started working for Bob Wischmann helping with honeybees and working beside Kenny Taylor where they shared many adventures together. He enjoyed his job tremendously and talked proudly about working with honeybees. In 1979, he started working for his Uncle Luther Wilhelmsen which began his career in trucking. At this time, Gregg and Cal Peck became skilled at hauling watermelon from the south. He continued to work for various trucking outfits combining 47 years of experience. He was considered a professional and has mentored many drivers throughout the years. One of the highlights of his career was when he bought a new Kenworth truck in 1999. The past 11 years he has worked for Tony Drueke Trucking. He had a passion for trucking.
He was an avid Husker fan attending many games and watching as many games as he could on the Big 10 Network. He had a remarkable memory and could recite players statistics and scores. He also loved watching his grandchildren at sporting events. Gregg enjoyed golfing with his kids and being with family every opportunity he could. He also loved a leisure drive through the country. His biggest joy in life was his beloved family and friends and spending time with them.
Those left to celebrate Gregg's memories; his loving mother, Jeanne of Kimball, South Dakota; his devoted and caring companion, Carol Boyum of Spencer, Nebraska; daughter Carrie (Mike) Henrickson Mitchell, SD; son Kelly (Julie) Wilhelmsen Baltic, SD; son Kyle (Amber) Wilhelmsen Burke, SD; daughter Kadie (Gary) Nickerson, Fort Pierre, SD; son Austin (Jessica) Klinkel, Bellevue, NE; daughter Shelby Wilhelmsen Spencer, NE; sister Glee (Dick) Deffenbaugh Kimball, SD; sister Jolene Wilhelmsen Castlewood, SD; Uncle Luther (Avis) Wilhelmsen Burke, SD; Aunt Betty Fast Winner, SD; Uncle Jerry Hutchinson Burke, SD, 15 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, and many cousins, nieces, nephews, friends, and neighbors.
He was preceded in death by his father Peter, sister Glenda Jean Adams, brother Gary John, several aunts and uncles, and great niece Alexia Dee Deffenbaugh.
In lieu of flowers or gifts, a donation can be made to Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Jamison, Nebraska. We would love to have friends join us for a celebration of Gregg's life at Tony Drueke Trucking on April 10 th at 2 p.m.; wear your Husker apparel.
