Glen Earl 'Barney' Barnes was born September 16, 1919 at Winner, South Dakota to Claude and Blanch (Lantis) Barnes. He died July 18, 2008 at the Fountain Springs Health Center in Rapid City, South Dakota at the age of 88 years. Glen was raised in the Dallas area. On April 14, 1937 he was enrolled in the CCC's at Blue Bell, South Dakota with an honorable discharge in 1939. In 1942 he served in the 76th Infantry, 6 1/2 months US training and 2 1/2 years overseas in the European and African Theaters. He served with the 885th Chemical Company as an Automotive Equipment Operator, 8th Air Force. He received an honorable discharge on November 8, 1945. On January 3, 1950 he married Velma Klein of Burke. They made their first home at Spirit Lake, Iowa where he was a City Street Commissioner for one year. In 1951, Glen entered the road construction business where he worked for Peter Kiewit, the State Highway Department and Myrl Clarke Construction. In 1970 he was a heavy Equipment Operator for Pennington County Highway Department until his retirement in 1982. Glen was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Lucille and two brothers: Lloyd and Floyd. Glen is survived by his wife, Velma of Rapid City, South Dakota; his sisters: Mildred Gruhn and Lorraine Hlavka both of Gregory, South Dakota and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 24, 2008 at 10:00 AM at Clausen Funeral Home in Burke. Burial will in the Graceland Cemetery, Burke. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4 to 8 PM at the funeral home.
