Frances Agnes Opbroek was born March 2, 1909 at Fairfax, South Dakota to Anton and Mary (Humpal) Pistulka and she died April 16, 2008 at the Gregory Hospital in Gregory, South Dakota at the age of 99 years, 1 month and 14 days.
Frances attended Catholic School in Bonesteel for three years before finishing her schooling in Fairfax. She helped out with house work for many of her relatives. She was united in marriage to Hubert Opbroek in St. Anthonys Catholic Church in Fairfax, her husband of 56 years, and to this union three daughters were born: Madonna, Modesta and Marlene. Together, they lived on a farm one mile east of Fairfax until retiring in 1978.
Frances was an active member of St. Anthonys Catholic Church, serving in the Altar Society, as a sacristan at daily mass and rosary at the church every morning for many years until poor health kept her from doing so. She enjoyed being a hard working farm wife, helping with the field work and the farm animals. She was a wonderful, loving and supportive mother to her family, and a special treat for her was playing cards with her friends and having coffee every morning with her friends at the caf in Fairfax.
Frances is survived by her daughters, Madonna and Modesta Opbroek of Fairfax, SD; a sister, Marie Walman of Oak Grove, OR; a sister-in-law, Rosalain Pistulka of Bonesteel, SD; and Leona Pistulka Hausmann, who was like a sister-in-law; as well as many special friends, nieces and nephews.
Frances was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert; her daughter, Marlene in infancy; her parents; three brothers, two sisters and Ray Pistulka, a cousin who was part of the family.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 21, 2008 at 10:30 AM at St. Anthonys Catholic Church in Fairfax, SD. Burial will be in the St. Anthonys Catholic Cemetery, rural Fairfax. There will be a rosary on Sunday at 7:00 PM at the Church. Visitation will be one hour prior to both services at the Church.
