Foster Farrand was born October 14, 1914 at the family farm near Dorsey, Nebraska to William and Minnie (Gibson) Farrand. He died August 25, 2008 at the Community Memorial Hospital in Burke, South Dakota at the age of 93 years. Foster gave his heart to the Lord as a young man and faithfully served God until his death. He worked on the family farm until he was inducted into the service in June of 1942. He received training as a US Army medic and then became a trainer himself. He trained many young men who became medics and were sent into battle. He was sent overseas in February of 1945 where he served as a field medic with the 71st Infantry Division in France, Germany and Austria. He was discharged near the end of 1945. Upon returning home he worked as a mechanic in the Spencer and Lynch, Nebraska area. On august 19, 1959 he married Lorene Mayer and to this union one son was born. They lived in Lynch, Nebraska for two years and then they moved to Burke, South Dakota, where they have lived since. Foster was the parts manager at the John Deere Implement dealership for 12 years and then opened his own repair shop, where he worked on cars, tractors and small engines. He was quite talented mechanically and could fix anything. He retired in 1995. Foster was preceded in death by his parents, William and Minnie; four brothers: Forrest, Norman, Clarence and Howard (as a child). Foster is survived by his wife, Lorene of Burke, South Dakota; his son, Wendell and wife Beverly and his grandsons: Austin and Zachery all of Springfield, Missouri; one sister, Morna and one brother, Irvin, both of O'Neill, Nebraska as well as many other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 29, 2008 at 10:30 AM at Clausen Funeral Home in Burke. Burial will be in the Graceland Cemetery, Burke. Visitation will be Thursday from 4 to 8 PM at the funeral home.
