IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Evelyn May
Sundquist
September 11, 1930 – November 9, 2024
Evelyn May (Vosika) Sundquist was born on September 11, 1930, to Stanley and Ona (Stastny) Vosika. She was raised on the family farm near Gregory. She was a tomboy being surrounded by two older and two younger brothers. She and her brothers attended Powell School – with Melvin driving the team and wagon the two miles to school and picking up neighbor children along the way. Occasionally, she and her brothers had to walk to school. A barn kept the team and wagon until school ended to return home. She and her brothers each carried a dinner pail which contained bread and butter for lunch. One of her favorite pastimes was fishing at Burke Lake with her dad and brothers.
Evelyn then attended Gregory High School. The neighbors took turns bringing the neighborhood kids to and from Gregory with a team and wagon and lasting friendships were formed. After high school graduation, Evelyn was employed at Wilson's Storage and Transfer in Winner, a trucking company. A job opportunity came along at Northwestern Bank in Gregory where she and her best friend Evelyn (Kucera) Meyers, were both hired and she became one of three bookkeepers.
She met the love of her life when she attended a dance at Herrick with one of her girlfriends. She was wearing a shimmery green dress and caught the eye of a handsome 6'3" Swede named Dick Sundquist. They married on October 7, 1951, and lived on the family farm north of Dallas during which time their sons Gary and Kevin were born. They lived on the farm until 1958 when they moved to their home in Dallas. Daughter Kim and son Troy completed the family.
While Evelyn was busy raising four children she found enjoyment cooking, baking, and gardening. One of their favorite social activities was getting together with friends on Sunday afternoons to play pinocle. Attending dances with Czech and Polish music was a favorite activity. One of Evelyn's special joys was searching for treasures at Thrift Stores and garage sales.
After husband Dick unexpectedly passed away in 1982, she assumed the responsibility of a single parent raising their 11-year-old son, Troy.
In her careers away from home, she worked at Williams Furniture, Roy's Honda in shoes and apparel, was an assistant cook for Taggart's Hunting Service, was a med aide at Silver Threads and was an instrumental part in raising and helping with grandchildren Jerin and Jada's childhoods.
Evelyn was able to live on her own until 2019. After that time, she lived in various assisted living facilities, spent time living with Kevin and Lorrie at their home, and then moved to long term care until the time she passed. Even though Evelyn faced difficulties in her life she enjoyed the "little things". Those "little things" included birds, blooming flowers, visits from Grandchildren and Great-Grandchildren, listening to polka music, and writing poems.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Dick, infant twins Lee and LeeAnn, son Kevin, brothers Stanley Jr. (wife Velda), Melvin (wife Helen), Ivan (wife Shirley), Jim (wife Claudine), granddaughter Amber and great-grandson Gabriel.
She is survived by children Gary of Hansen, ID, daughter-in-law Lorrie Sundquist, Gregory, SD, Kim (Dewey) Ludemann, Fairfax, SD, Troy (Paula) Sundquist, Gregory, SD and grandchildren Bryce (Cassie), Tren (Emmy), Lindsay Sundquist, Jerin and Jada Sundquist, Kacie (Dan) Clousing, Adam (Kristy) Ludemann, Allison and Aaron Sundquist and a host of great grandchildren.
